About Henderson Castle

Henderson Castle sits atop West Main Hill overlooking Kalamazoo, a few minutes from downtown. Frank Henderson, whose company made uniforms and regalia for fraternal orders and the military, hired Milwaukee architect C. A. Gombert to design it, and the family held its housewarming in 1895. The Queen Anne mansion covers about 11,000 square feet on three acres, built of Lake Superior sandstone and brick, with mahogany, bird's-eye maple and quartered oak inside, leaded and stained glass, an original elevator and a third-floor ballroom.

Today it is an inn with 14 guest rooms, breakfast included, and a rooftop hot tub with a view over the city. The h Chophouse serves dinner daily under Master Chef Francois Moyet, with tableside dishes, Sunday brunch and a 17-course chef's tasting menu, and the Spirits Lounge pours cocktails. Down in the Wine Cave, guests can book tastings and self-guided wine flights.

Castle tours and the Queen's Tea Service run through the week, and monthly princess tea parties and murder mystery dinners make good outings for families and groups. The castle also hosts weddings and private events and has a small spa offering facials and massages. Space is limited, so book rooms, dinners and teas ahead.

Shades of Lavender Farm near Mattawan is about 10 miles west. Spend a summer afternoon among the lavender, then come back for tea or dinner at the castle.
