About Foster Harris House

Foster Harris House is a 1905 house on Main Street in the small Rappahannock County town of Washington, which the inn notes was first surveyed by a young George Washington in 1749. It has been a bed and breakfast since 1984 and keeps its heart pine floors and original windows.

There are five rooms. The Compton Room was the original family's main bedroom and is the largest. The Garden Suite has a soaking tub and rainfall shower, Mountain View looks across a pasture to the Blue Ridge and has a free-standing stove, the Peter's Suite joins two bedrooms that each have a bath, and the Washington Suite has a private back entrance and sunset views. The inn welcomes children over 13 traveling with their parents.

Breakfast is a three-course plated meal served at 9 a.m. in the dining room, with the menu adjusted for dietary needs shared at booking. The Inn at Little Washington is about a ten-minute walk away, and the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive is about 20 minutes by car, so this is a base for hiking in the morning and dinner in town in the evening, any month of the year.

Lavender Bliss Cottage in Delaplane is the nearest lavender farm, about 18 miles northeast. Allow roughly 40 minutes on country roads, and plan the trip for its late-spring bloom, when it opens its fields to visitors.

What to do

  • Drive about 20 minutes to Skyline Drive at the Thornton Gap entrance
