About Greaves Jams & Marmalades

Greaves has made preserves in Niagara-on-the-Lake since 1927, when Mabel Greaves began cooking marmalade from a family recipe in a brick house in town. Her husband William helped the family buy 55 Queen Street, and for decades the jams were both made and sold there. The Greaves family ran the business until 1989, when two local families took it over and moved production to a factory on Walker Road. The original shop, in a building dating to about 1845, still stands on Queen Street in the Old Town.

The range runs to more than 40 jams, jellies, marmalades and condiments. Batches are stirred by hand in open stainless-steel kettles using whole fruit and pure cane sugar, with no artificial preservatives. Jellies are made from juice the company presses itself, and the wine jellies use local VQA Niagara wines. Hot red pepper jelly is the bestseller, alongside black currant jam, blood orange marmalade and peach chutney.

The shop is open every day of the year, generally 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with summer hours running to 8 p.m. It is a quick stop on a Queen Street stroll and a practical place to gather gifts, and the company also assembles custom gift boxes for weddings and events. A guest suite above the store comes with a 10 percent discount in the shop.

neob Lavender is about 10 minutes south by car, out along Niagara Stone Road. In bloom season, pick up a few jars in the Old Town and then head out to walk the lavender fields.
