About Lindores Abbey Distillery

Lindores Abbey Distillery stands beside the ruins of Lindores Abbey on the edge of Newburgh, close to the south bank of the Tay. The site is tied to the earliest written reference to Scotch whisky, a 1494 record involving the abbey, and the distillery describes its approach as modern whisky-making on an ancient site. It makes the MCDXCIV, Thiron and Friar John Cor Congregation single malts, along with Aqua Vitae and its new make spirit.

From March to October it is open every day, 10am to 4pm; from November to February it opens Wednesday to Sunday and closes Monday and Tuesday. Distillery tours run year-round at 10am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm for up to 12 people, covering the whisky-making process and the site's history and finishing with two drams, at £25 a head (as listed 2026). Private tours and tastings can be arranged on any day with advance booking.

If you'd rather taste without a tour, self-guided whisky flights start at £12.50 for guests over 18. The Legacy Bar is on the second floor, and sharing platters for two or four, plus a vegetarian platter, can be pre-ordered at least 48 hours ahead. Dogs are welcome, and well-behaved dogs can even join a tour if the rest of the group agrees.

Scottish Lavender Oils near Kinross is about 25 minutes southwest, so a summer day can combine a morning tour here with an afternoon in the lavender.
