About Margan Wines & Restaurant
Andrew and Lisa Margan started this family winery in Broke in 1996, and it is now marking 30 years. Their son Ollie works alongside Andrew on the vineyards and winemaking. The estate farms about 90 hectares of vines, many on the old volcanic soils of the Fordwich Sill, and bottles single-vineyard wines from sites such as Fordwich Hill, Timbervines and Saxonvale.
The rammed-earth cellar door is open every day. Alongside Hunter staples like Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, the list runs to Albariño, Tempranillo, Barbera, Mourvèdre and a Huesgen & Margan Riesling. Tastings and guided farm tours, which take in the kitchen garden, vineyard and winery, can be booked online.
The restaurant has been open since 2007 and cooks mostly with food grown or raised on the property. Lunch, a la carte or a set menu of two or three courses, is served Thursday to Monday with wines by the glass, by the bottle or as a guided pairing. The Ultimate Margan Experience combines a farm tour with a tasting menu on the terrace. Families and dogs are welcome at the restaurant, and dietary needs can be catered for with notice. Groups of more than eight should contact the team directly. Weddings, private events and corporate retreats are also held here.
Hunter Lavender Farm is also in Broke, roughly 15 minutes away, and opens daily for about four weeks over December. A farm tour and lunch at Margan makes a good second half to a morning in the lavender.
