About Rayners Orchard
Heather and her husband bought a 37½-acre bush block at Woori Yallock in 1977, so overgrown it took nearly an hour to walk to the house site. Fencing for cattle proved too much, so they planted fruit instead; cherries came out after about seven years of losses to birds and rain. The family sold through farmers' markets for years before starting farm tours and a café, and sons Cameron and Andrew and the grandchildren now work the orchard, which holds more than 450 fruit varieties, from stone fruit to feijoas, tamarillos and pepino.
The main way to see it is the U-Pick and Orchard Adventure tractor tour, about 90 minutes long. Tours leave every 90 minutes from 10 a.m.; the last one goes at 2:30 p.m. from March to November and 3:30 p.m. from December to February. A guide stops so you can taste up to eight ripe varieties from the trees, you crack and eat fresh macadamias, feed the farm animals and watch the farm dogs' tricks, and for most of the year you can pick fruit to take home, weighed at the café at A$7 a kilo. One of the five trailers is wheelchair accessible.
The Peach Café overlooks the orchard and serves coffee, snacks, farm-style meals and homemade treats, and the shop sells fruit products made without artificial ingredients. The orchard also runs fruit bottling classes, school activities and children's parties, and has a function room for weddings and events.
Warratina Lavender Farm in Wandin North is about 9 km away, roughly 15 minutes' drive, and opens Wednesday to Sunday, with lavender at its peak from mid-November through December.
