About Warratina Lavender Farm
Warratina is a small family lavender farm in the Yarra Valley, about an hour east of Melbourne. Lavender covers five of its ten acres, and the family grows, harvests and makes its own lavender products. About an acre of rows sits right beside the tea room, car park and shop, so you do not have to walk far to be among the plants. The farm grows several kinds: intermedia for drying and fragrance, angustifolia for cooking, dentata for hedges and stoechas for pots.
Flowering starts in early November, and peak bloom runs from mid-November to the end of December, the Southern Hemisphere summer. Harvest follows in December and January, and edible lavender is picked early in the season. Some lavender is on show all year, including winter-flowering kinds, and in spring the home gardens add bulbs, roses and blossom. Visitors can wander the rows, the gardens and the drying shed.
The Tea House serves lavender scones, lavender teas, coffee and cold drinks, and you can book a morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea sitting. The shop sells dried lavender grown and processed on the farm, plus lavender lollies, tea, honey, jam, soaps, body care and furniture polish. Groups can arrange visits, and the grounds host weddings and parties.
Wandin Valley Farms is about five minutes away, and the berry and cherry farms around Wandin East and Silvan make the same drive a full farm day in summer.
