About Wollersheim Winery & Distillery

Wollersheim Winery & Distillery sits on a hillside across the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac, on land where Hungarian nobleman Agoston Haraszthy planted grapes in the 1840s before leaving for California. The Kehl family built the stone winery between 1858 and 1867 and made wine until the vines froze in 1899. Bob and JoAnn Wollersheim bought the farm in 1972 and reopened it for tours and winemaking the next year. Philippe Coquard, a winemaker from Beaujolais, joined in 1985 and now runs the estate with his wife, Julie, and the Wollersheims. His Prairie Fumé, first made in 1989, brought the winery national attention.

Flight tastings are poured every day from noon to 5 in both the winery and the distillery, which opened in a new stillhouse in 2015 and makes brandy and other spirits, including the house Old Fashioned. No reservation is needed for a flight; guided walking tours of the winery run on select days and are booked ahead. The hillside wine cave, the oldest structure on the property, was restored in 2013 as a history exhibit. Most grapes are machine-harvested, but ice wine grapes and the steepest slopes are still picked by hand.

The bistro serves lunch daily from noon to 3 (to 4 on Saturdays), and monthly Sunday brunches run 9:30 to 3, first come, first served. Fall 2026 events include the Ruby Nouveau release on November 19 and Festive Fridays on December 4, 11 and 18 with live music in the distillery. Dogs are allowed in designated outdoor areas, and outside food and drink are not.

New Life Lavender & Cherry Farm near Baraboo is about 25 minutes north, so a summer day can pair a lavender wagon tour with a late-afternoon flight here.
