This corner of Ontario sits where the farm towns of Huron County, such as Blyth, Brussels and Wingham, meet south Bruce County around Teeswater. Country roads link small main streets and quiet conservation areas along the Maitland River, and about 40 minutes west the Lake Huron town of Goderich has three sandy beaches and a 1.5 km boardwalk. Summer is the busy season, when the Blyth Festival stages Canadian plays on an open-air stage and in Memorial Hall.
Two lavender farms anchor a day here. Lavender Works Co., on Newry Road near Brussels, grows about 2,000 plants in six varieties and opens its shop from May 1, Tuesday to Saturday, with yoga, paint nights and sunset picnics in the rows. Essentially Lavender, just north-west of Teeswater, blooms from late June to mid-August and adds a labyrinth, an apiary and a July festival. The farms are about 30 minutes apart, so you can see both in one day and still fit in strawberry picking near Lucknow or lunch at a farm brewery outside Blyth.
