About Alexis Bailly Vineyard

Alexis Bailly Vineyard, south of Hastings, was planted in 1973 as Minnesota's first commercial vineyard, and the winery followed in 1978. It still makes its wines in Minnesota, and the current list includes Voyageur, Hastings Reserve, a Frontenac, a Seyval Blanc, Golden Gris, Endless Summer and a Chocolate Reserve dessert wine.

The tasting room opens Thursday afternoons and from midday Friday through Sunday. Order by the glass or bottle, or build a flight of three or six wines from the menu of whites, roses, reds and dessert wines. For a deeper look, winemaker Genevieve Gallagher leads Vine to Wine, a 90-minute small-group tour and tasting about the vineyard's history, the cold-hardy grapes that grow here and how the wine is made; sign up on their website.

Food is easy: the bar sells grab-and-go and build-your-own charcuterie, and you are welcome to bring your own picnic. Seating is first come, first served indoors and around the grounds, and open-air yurts for six to eight people can be booked in 90-minute blocks. A wood-fired sauna with cold therapy and a bonfire also operates on the property by reservation. The events calendar includes Music in the Vineyard, solo musicians, bingo, food trucks and classes. The vineyard calls itself family friendly, and children need to stay with an adult.

Lavender Barnyard in Farmington is about 25 minutes west, so during the summer bloom you can pick lavender in the morning and spend the afternoon here.
