About Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop
Fragrant Isle grew out of Martine Anderson's wish for a lavender field like the ones she knew in the south of France. After she and her husband Edgar retired to Washington Island, they studied the island's weather and soil, drew up plans in 2012 and set almost 9,000 plants into four fields the next spring. The farm now covers 21 acres with about 20,000 plants in more than 14 varieties, an oil distillery, a shop and a café, and it employs 25 to 30 people in peak season, most of them islanders.
The oil is steam-distilled in handmade copper stills from Portugal, and the farm says it is the only Door County lavender farm distilling this way. Field tours of about 30 minutes cover the farm and the distillery and can be booked ahead; the tour package waives the field fee, and private tours can be arranged. Entering the fields cost $6 per person from June 13 through Labor Day in 2026, with no fee after Labor Day. Bloom usually peaks in July and August, depending on weather.
Le Café serves food and drinks, and on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 7 PM a wine and appetizer hour waives the field fee. The shop carries all-natural goods made with the farm's own essential oils: bath and body care, hand creams and lotions, body wash, a men's line with beard oil and balm, candles, culinary lavender, books and gift kits. The farm also hosts micro weddings, receptions and vow renewals, and offers motorcoach group packages.
Bread & Water Bakery & Café, a short drive across the island, is a good second stop for a meal.
