About Bea's Ho-Made Products

Bea's Ho-Made Products is a family kitchen and shop on Highway 42 about half a mile east of Gills Rock, near the northern tip of the Door Peninsula. The Landin family has owned the homestead since 1884. In 1961 Linda Landin sold cherries from a picnic table by the road, then added extra beans and cucumbers and her grandmother's chopped cherry jam. Her mother, Bea, kept expanding the list, and in 1972 she built the kitchen and retail store that still stands today.

The shelves hold the result of decades of recipes: about three dozen jams, a dozen-plus jellies, fruit butters and sauces, cucumber pickles, pickled vegetables, salsas, relishes and fruit syrups. Chopped cherry jam is still a signature. For lower-sugar diets, the chopped cherry, raspberry and strawberry jams come in half-sugar versions, and the apple butter has no added sugar.

Pies are made here too, and they are a reason to stop in person, because Bea's does not ship them. The shop is open all year, with longer days from late June through October and shorter winter hours, which makes it a handy stop before or after the ferry to Washington Island.

Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop on Washington Island is reached by the car ferry from Northport, a few minutes past Bea's; allow about an hour including the crossing.
