About Jackson Harbor Soup
Jackson Harbor Soup sits at the north end of Washington Island on Jackson Harbor, the departure point for the passenger ferry to Rock Island. The idea was simple: people coming back from a day of hiking on Rock Island should be able to get a warm meal. The site has deep family roots: the founder's great-grandfather Rasmus Hanson and his sons built the fish tug Welcome here about 90 years ago. 2026 is its 11th season.
Lunch runs Thursday through Monday, 11 am to 3 pm. The regular soups are Grammy's potato, beer and cheddar, and baked French onion, with daily specials on the board, served by the cup, bowl or bread bowl, and by the quart to take away. Hot paninis include the Maggie, with grilled onions, tomato, pesto, blue cheese and provolone, and the Wreck of the Iris, named for a schooner that ran aground out front in 1913. There are cold sandwiches, wraps, salads and a kids' menu too.
A welcome basket lets you pick two of a cup of soup, half a salad or half a sandwich. Seating is indoors and out, looking over Jackson Harbor toward Rock Island, and it is a natural place to pick up lunch before or after the ferry.
Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop is a short drive south on the same side of the island, so lunch here pairs well with a lavender stop.
