About K.K. Fiske Restaurant & The Granary

K.K. Fiske is a downtown restaurant on Main Road that calls itself the home of the Fish Mortician. Its draw is fish caught fresh around the island when available: whitefish and burbot, the bottom-dwelling Great Lakes fish that island fishermen nickname lawyers. Burbot comes deep-fried, boiled or pan-fried, which makes this one of the few places a visitor can try it.

The kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with nightly specials and soups, bread and pies made in house; the bread is baked fresh every day. Hours change through the year, so the restaurant asks guests to call ahead.

The fish boil is the event to plan around. Fish boils are held on Saturdays in season, and the state tourism listing also names Wednesdays; the island chamber notes that reservations are required, so call before you go. Next door, The Granary is a full-service bar that serves the same menu, with live entertainment and an outdoor tiki bar called The Coop in season. On summer Saturday mornings the Washington Island Farmers' Market sets up on the restaurant's south lawn from 9 to noon, so a market browse can roll straight into lunch.

Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm & Shop is about 10 minutes northeast of downtown, which makes a lavender visit and a whitefish dinner an easy pairing on a summer island day.
