About Green Olive at Red Hill

Green Olive is a 27-acre working farm in the Red Hill hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, about an hour from Melbourne. Greg and Sue O'Donoghue have farmed it since 2002, now with their children Sam and Sophie. They grow five olive varieties (frantoio, leccino, picual, manzanilla and kalamata), planted a vineyard in 2008, and raise vegetables, herbs and bush foods such as lemon myrtle, finger lime and mountain pepper. Wiltshire Pole sheep, Indian Runner ducks and a Shetland pony named Gracie share the farm.

The all-day farm menu is built on grazing plates using their own produce, served from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with coffee, wine and dessert until 5 p.m. The farm's wines include sparkling, pinot grigio, chardonnay, rosé, pinot noir and shiraz, and a 30-minute tasting paddle of whites, reds or a mix comes with olives. Anyone tasting must be 18 or over.

Families are welcome, with a children's menu and farm animals to visit, and dogs are welcome on the farm. A one-hour farm tour led by one of the owners looks at their solar power, rainwater harvesting and regenerative practices, and there is a bush food garden to explore. Booked seatings are 9:45 a.m. for brunch and 11:45 a.m. or 2 p.m. for lunch, and weekends fill quickly.

Red Hill Lavender is only about 5 minutes away in Main Ridge, so a walk through the lavender rows pairs easily with a grazing lunch here; plan a designated driver if anyone is tasting.
