About Montalto

Montalto is a cool-climate wine estate on Shoreham Road in Red Hill South, making three labels from its own vineyards under winemaker Simon Black. What sets it apart for a day trip is the sculpture trail: about a kilometer of grassy lawns, gravel paths and boardwalks that wind through the vines and over the wetlands, past works collected between 2003 and 2023, many of them winners of the estate's annual sculpture prize. The trail is free, open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and takes up to an hour.

The cellar door keeps the same daily hours. Seated tastings last about 45 minutes: the Current Release tasting is A$20 per person and is waived with a wine purchase of A$45 or more per person, and the Wine and Cheese tasting pairs four wines with local cheeses for A$40 per person (minimum two, from 2 p.m.). Walk-ins are welcome when there is room, and bookings take up to six guests. A 15 percent surcharge applies on public holidays.

The restaurant serves a changing set menu of shared courses built on estate-grown produce and needs a booking; there is a three-course children's menu for A$49. The Piazza is the casual option among the gardens, with wood-fired pizzas and views over the vines and sculptures. Private picnics pair a tasting with courses brought out through the afternoon, and BRASA open-fire dinners are scheduled for October 24 and December 5, 2026.

Red Hill Lavender in Main Ridge is about 10 minutes west, so a lavender stop pairs well with a walk on the sculpture trail and lunch at the Piazza.
