About Milner Valley Cheese

Milner Valley Cheese is a working goat dairy in the Milner Valley south of Fort Langley, run by the Smith family, who have farmed this ground since 1885. The land was once part of the early Hudson's Bay Company farm that supplied the Fort Langley post, and over the years the family has raised chickens, dairy cows, potatoes, nuts and pears before turning to cheese. Today a herd of about 72 Nubian, Alpine and Saanen goats supplies all the milk, which makes this true farmstead cheese: made on the same farm as the animals.

The cheese is sold from the Farmgate Shop inside Smith Heritage House, a 1910 farmhouse that the Township of Langley has designated a heritage site. The range includes fresh goat cheese, spreadable chèvre (plain and flavored), Milner Jack in peppercorn, chili, jalapeño, garlic and sun-dried tomato versions, cheese curds, goat feta, Colby-style, a crumbly Caerphilly and a goat cheese aged more than a year. Look for Tipsy Goat, an aged cheese soaked in Merlot, which is made in small batches.

Because the goats milk for about nine months of the year, from spring into early winter, what is on the shelf changes with the season. The shop opens Tuesday through Saturday from April to December and closes from January through March, so plan spring and fall cheese runs accordingly.

Full Bloom Lavender Farm in South Langley is about 15 minutes away by car, which makes an easy pairing in summer: pick up cheese in the morning, then head south to the lavender field for the afternoon.
