About Schnitzelbank

Schnitzelbank is Jasper's long-running German restaurant on 3rd Avenue. Larry and Betty Hanselman bought a tavern on the site in 1961, then tore it down and opened the restaurant in 1971, cooking from family recipes for German and local dishes. Their children and grandchildren now help run it. Outside, a glockenspiel first added in 1988 chimes on its 16 bells while a conductor and animated figures put on a show.

The German side of the menu covers sauerbraten, Wiener schnitzel, beef rolladen, goulash, Kassler rippchen, a braised pork shank and a sampler with bratwurst, knackwurst and bockwurst, along with steaks, seafood and the restaurant's thick 2-inch chops. The Wunderbar Salad Bar can be a meal on its own. On the 2026 menu, most German plates ran $18 to $33 and the salad bar was $14. Save room for apple strudel or German chocolate pie.

Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 a.m., and a kids menu covers children under 10. The restaurant has a full bar with beer and wine, a gift shop and private dining rooms for groups, and its catering arm can serve very large events. The family also built the Hampton Inn next door, handy for an overnight.

White River Lavender Farm is about 15 minutes north of Jasper, so a German dinner here can follow an afternoon visit; check the farm's open days first.
