About The Schnitzelbank
The Schnitzelbank is Jasper's best-known German restaurant and has been on the same corner for decades. Larry and Betty Hanselman bought a tavern on the site in 1961, then tore it down and opened the restaurant in 1971 using family recipes, and their children and grandchildren still run it. Inside you will find checkered tablecloths, wooden chairs and a wood-paneled pub, and the family has installed a new Glockenspiel with 16 bells and animated figures.
The menu centers on German classics: Wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, goulash, beef rouladen, a smoked Kassler pork chop, braised pork shank, and plates of bratwurst, bockwurst and knackwurst. A sampler platter lets two people try all eight meats. Apple strudel and German chocolate pie close out the meal. Steaks and seafood are there for anyone who wants something else.
The salad bar is a draw on its own, with homemade salads, soups, bread, turnip slaw and pickled herring, and it can be ordered as a meal or swapped in with an entree. Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 am, kids under 10 have their own menu, and there is a full bar. Private dining rooms handle groups, and the family also runs a catering business and an event center in town.
White River Lavender Farm is about 8 miles north of downtown Jasper, so a lavender outing and a German dinner fit easily into one day in Dubois County.
