About St. Julian Winery

St. Julian has made wine and juice for more than a century, and its Paw Paw headquarters on South Kalamazoo Street is where the work happens. The company is family-owned and now led by the fourth generation. It calls itself Michigan's longest-running and most-awarded winery and the state's first craft distillery, and it buys fruit from more than 19 local growers for over 100 products.

The Paw Paw site has three spaces for tasting, and the range is wide: red, white, rosé, sparkling, fruit and dessert wines; hard ciders; spirits including brandy, gin, rum, vodka, whiskey and an agave spirit; and non-alcoholic choices such as juice. Bottles are sold on site to take home.

Winery tours go behind the scenes with a guided walk through production, a barrel tasting and a curated wine tasting. Space is limited and tickets are required, so check the tours listed on their website before you go. The site also has two private rooms for events, the Apollo Room and the Barrel Cellar. The tasting room is open every day, with later hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and closes only for a few holidays.

Shades of Lavender Farm in Mattawan is about 15 minutes east, and Warner Vineyards is next door on the same street. A lavender walk at Shades in the morning followed by a Paw Paw tasting makes a full afternoon.
