About Stover's Farm Market & U-Pic
Stover's Farm Market & U-Pic sits on M-139 between Berrien Springs and Benton Harbor, on land the Stover family has farmed since the late 1800s after John and Sarah Stover came west from Pennsylvania in 1870. Ken Stover II and his wife June run the farm with Kenny Stover III and his wife Erin. The family's 165-year-old bank barn, framed with wooden pegs instead of nails, still anchors the place.
The picking calendar is long. Strawberries and sweet and tart cherries come first in June and July, followed by apricots, blackberries and blueberries in July and August. Peaches run from July into September, with Red Haven, Crest Haven, Glo Haven and Baby Gold among the varieties, alongside pears and pluots. September and October bring apples such as Honeycrisp, Gala and Pink Lady, plus grapes and pumpkins.
The Big Red Barn market sells ready-picked fruit and vegetables and a long shelf of jams, fruit butters, salsas, pickles, honey and maple syrup, and staff will help you choose apples for pies or pit pie cherries. Containers for picking are free. Children are welcome in the orchard, and those under 10 need an adult with them. Groups can arrange school trips, and the family notes that a walk past the end of the apple orchard leads to woods and a ravine where deer, turkeys and foxes live.
Hickory Creek Lavender Farm near Stevensville is about 7 miles to the west, so a June or July morning of cherries here can roll straight into lavender picking.
