About Lehman's Orchard
Lehman's Orchard on Portage Road north of Niles goes back to 1929, when Ralph Lehman, a schoolteacher, traded a farm in northern Indiana for this one. After trying several crops he settled on tart cherries, and 40 acres are still planted to them. In 1951 he added a cherry pitting machine and a building to wash and sort fruit. His grandson Steve now runs the orchard full time, and in 2008 the family added a winery and cidery to the farm market.
Picking opens in June and moves through the summer and into fall. During the 2026 season the farm posted raspberries and blackberries at $7.50 a pound, tomatoes and Honeycrisp apples, with more apple varieties coming in from August. Pitted tart cherries are sold frozen in four-pound bags in the market.
The farm market also carries jams, fruit syrups and the family's own wine and hard ciders. Buckets are supplied for picking, fruit is weighed when you finish, and you should bring your own containers to carry it home. The family also runs a farmhouse brewery in nearby Buchanan.
Lavender Hill Farm of Niles is only about 4 miles away, so cherries or berries here and lavender there make a compact summer outing south of Berrien Springs.
