About Yoder's Meat & Cheese
Yoder's Meat & Cheese has been part of Shipshewana since 1972, when Perry Yoder bought the property on State Road 5 next to the flea market and auction barn. The business began in 1960 as a butchering shop east of Goshen and moved entirely to Shipshewana after a fire in 1992. Today it is run by the third and fourth generations of the family, and they still raise cattle locally on a cow-calf operation with two feedlots.
The store carries about 150 cuts of meat, including grain-fed and grass-fed beef, pork, chicken and buffalo, along with a full line of meats smoked in-house. The cheese case holds more than 100 varieties, and there is a deli plus shelves of jams, jellies, salsas, candy, popcorn and canned goods. The self-serve freezer of packaged beef draws shoppers from a long way off.
The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm and closed Sundays, so it fits easily into a flea market day; bring a cooler if you plan to buy fresh or frozen meat and keep exploring. Smoked meats and cheese make good road snacks or gifts.
Bloomfield Schoolhouse Lavender Farm & Apothecary's shop in downtown LaGrange is about 15 minutes east on US 20, an easy pairing for a day of local food and handmade goods.
