About Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery
Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery is one of the anchors of downtown Shipshewana, a big dining room on Van Buren Street built around homestyle Amish cooking. The kitchen is known for pressure-fried chicken, homestyle roast beef, Amish chicken and noodles, meatloaf, smoked ham and Grandma's Haystack, and the bakery turns out bread and a long list of pies, about 27 kinds including seasonal flavors.
You can order from the menu, eat family style, or go through the buffet, whose hours vary, so call ahead if you want it. On Saturdays a breakfast buffet runs from 7 to 10:30 am with eggs, biscuits and gravy, hotcakes and French toast. Menu dining runs from 10:30 am, and the restaurant, bakery and the complex's shops close on Sundays.
The restaurant seats up to 350 for group dinners and is used to bus tours; groups can book an all-you-can-eat family-style meal of fried chicken, roast beef, meatloaf or ham with homemade noodles, bread and pie. The Blue Gate Theatre, a few steps away, stages musicals and concerts, so many visitors pair dinner with a show. Kids have their own menu with drumsticks, chicken tenders or macaroni and cheese.
Bloomfield Schoolhouse Lavender Farm & Apothecary sells its lavender goods in downtown LaGrange, about 15 minutes east on US 20.
