About Grande Mere Inn

Grande Mere Inn is a dinner restaurant on Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville, not a place to stay. Pete and Nancy Racine opened it in 1980, and their son Charley and his wife Tricia carry it on today. The cottage-style dining room sits on Covert Ridge with windows running the full west side, looking out over Lake Michigan. Sunsets are the draw, and on clear nights you can sometimes pick out the lights of Chicago across the water.

The menu leans on Great Lakes fish such as lake perch and walleye alongside steaks, ribs, chicken, duck and seafood, with burgers and lighter plates for a casual night. Soups, breads, dressings, sauces and desserts are made in-house, and the kitchen buys from wineries, brewers, cheesemakers and farms in southwest Michigan's fruit belt. Separate gluten-free and bar menus are offered, and the Cranberry Bog Bar is a cozy spot for a drink before dinner.

Dinner is served from 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and the restaurant is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Reservations are taken by phone.

Hickory Creek Lavender Farm is about a mile away in Stevensville, so a summer afternoon picking lavender can end with dinner here as the sun goes down over the lake.

What to do
