About The Village Bean Coffee House

The Village Bean is a small coffee house on St. Lawrence Street in Merrickville, two blocks from the Rideau Canal locks in this heritage village known for antiques and art. Owner Robyn moved to Merrickville from the city in 2009, came to love the village, and later bought the local coffee shop, redecorating it and reworking the menu under its current name.

The coffee is all fair trade and organic, roasted in St. Thomas, Ontario, and brewed fresh by the cup, along with lattes, cappuccinos and tea. Breakfast covers custom omelettes, egg wraps, bagels and fresh muffins, and lunch brings soup made every day, grilled paninis and sandwiches, with salads in summer and chili in winter. For something sweet there's carrot cake, lemon loaf, date squares, brownies, cookies and cinnamon buns.

It opens early, at 6 am every day, which makes it a good first stop before a day on the canal or the back roads. In summer there's patio seating; in winter, a cozy room inside. The café has free Wi-Fi, a public washroom and accessible entry, and everything can be ordered to go.

Lavender Mills Farm in Oxford Mills is about 15 km east, roughly a 20-minute drive, so you can grab coffee and a panini here and still be in the lavender rows by late morning in July.
