About Grahame's Bakery
Grahame's Bakery in downtown Kemptville is built around an 1885 commercial wood-fired brick oven, which the bakery describes as the oldest working wood-fired oven in Canada. Siblings Rick and Debbie Grahame have run it since 2005, taking over from their father, Ken, a second-generation baker. The oven has a story of its own: during the 1998 ice storm it cooked dozens of turkeys for neighbors without power, and in 2009 a stonemason rebuilt its collapsed arch and firebox.
The bread is the reason to come. Pumpernickel and light rye loaves come out of the wood oven, along with rolls that local restaurants serve, including a pub in Kemptville and a restaurant in Oxford Mills. The bakery's raisin butter tarts are its best-known item, and the counter also carries famous cinnamon buns, raisin scones, jam- and date-filled cookies, mincemeat tarts (not just at Christmas) and filled donuts in strawberry, lemon, crème and apple. Custom cakes are made to order.
The doors open at 5:30 am, so early risers get first pick; the bakery suggests coming early for the freshest donuts and, on lucky days, an apple fritter.
Lavender Mills Farm in Oxford Mills is about 10 minutes south, so a loaf and a box of butter tarts from Grahame's make a good start to a lavender morning.
