About Wasem Fruit Farm
Wasem Fruit Farm on Judd Road sits in rural Augusta Township between Ypsilanti and Milan. Ed and Leola Wasem moved here when they married in 1942, sold vegetables at the Ann Arbor Farmers' Market, and planted a large apple and peach orchard in the early 1950s. Their daughter Jan and her husband Bruce Upston joined in 1978, the same year the donut kitchen opened, and the family still runs the orchard.
The fall season is the time to come. In 2026 the farm opened September 10 and was open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through late October. More than a dozen apple varieties are offered for U-pick, from early ones like Paula Red to McIntosh, Empire, Jonathan, Northern Spy and Granny Smith, with more in the storeroom. A limited fall raspberry crop is ready in September and early October, and pumpkins of all shapes are usually ready to pick around the start of October.
Donuts are made fresh daily in autumn in plain, apple, blueberry and pumpkin batters, and the farm presses its own unpasteurized cider. The store also sells apple butter, jams and jellies, plus gourds, cornstalks and straw in October. School tours can be arranged. Leashed dogs are welcome outside if owners bag waste, but must stay out of the store.
