About Wiard's Orchards & Country Fair
Wiard's Orchards traces its start to 1837, when George Wiard began farming near today's Willow Run Airport, and the family calls it Michigan's oldest continually family-owned business. Construction of the Willow Run bomber plant in World War II forced a move to Ypsilanti Township, where seven generations have now worked the land; three are active today. The orchard and cider mill cover nearly 100 acres with more than 5,000 apple trees.
In fall the Country Fair opens Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekday tickets cover the corn maze, Old West wagon rides, the petting farm, mini golf, a firehouse play zone and the learning barn. Weekend tickets add the giant slide, fire engine rides, pedal tractor races, a bungee run, a moonwalk and a playground. U-pick apples and pumpkins cost extra and are for fair guests, though the store sells pre-bagged apples and pumpkins at the same price.
The Country Store and Bakery, free to enter and open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., sells cider from the farm's mill, donuts, pies, jams and hot sauces. After dark the farm runs Night Terrors, its haunted attraction, on a separate schedule. The fair is cashless, outside food is not allowed, and pets are not permitted, though registered service animals are.
Lavender Lane Farm near Milan is about 10 miles southwest, so a summer lavender trip and a fall fair day here make a good pair of outings.
