About Wood Orchard Market
Wood Orchard Market is a large roadside market on Highway 42 just north of Egg Harbor, run by the Wood family, who have been in the orchard business since 1955. Steve Wood opened the market in 1996, largely to sell Honeycrisp apples, and the family's apple-growing operation is based in Sturgeon Bay. The market says it is the only SweeTango grower in Wisconsin, and it trials new apple varieties with researchers and universities.
Fall is the market's busiest season. The orchard's apples, SweeTango, Honeycrisp, Smitten, Cortland and McIntosh, come in through the fall, and fresh apples are available from September into January. The bakery turns out apple, caramel apple nut and pumpkin pies, apple cider donuts and hand-dipped caramel apples, and apple cider is sold year-round. As the weather cools, part of the store fills with Christmas gifts and decor.
Cherries are the other theme: shelves of cherry salsa, cherry butter, cherry horseradish sauce and cherry honey mustard sit alongside jams, preserves, pickles and dressings. Kids get a free frozen apple cider pop, and there is a playground and an apple-shaped pedal-cart track around the market's big red apple.
Island Lavender is about 20 minutes northeast across the peninsula, so a summer drive up Highway 42 can take in the lavender and end with cherry treats at the market.
