About Wood Orchard Market

Wood Orchard Market is the farm store of a three-generation Door County fruit farm on Highway 42 in Egg Harbor. Jim and Barbara Wood moved up from St. Louis and started the farm in 1955; their son Steve and grandson Jeff carried it on, and the orchards now cover more than 200 acres of cherries, apples, strawberries and raspberries. The family has also been early to bring newer apple varieties such as SweeTango and Smitten to Wisconsin.

The fruit calendar is the reason to stop. Strawberries arrive mid-June to mid-July, sweet and tart cherries from early July into August, raspberries and blueberries in July and August, and apples from September through November. Sweet corn, sunflowers, squash, gourds and pumpkins fill the market in late summer and fall, and morels show up in late spring.

Inside, the bakery turns out fruit pies and doughnuts, including cherry doughnuts and cherry strudel, and the shelves hold jams, jellies, salsas, cherry butter, cherry honey mustard and cherry horseradish sauce. Children get a free frozen apple cider pop, a big playground built in 2019, and the apple-shaped pedal cart track around the market's Big Red Apple, a long-running family tradition.

Island Lavender's fields on Highway 57 between Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay are about 20 minutes across the peninsula, so the market makes a good pie and snack stop on the way.
