About Stone's Throw Winery

Stone's Throw Winery takes an unusual route for Door County: it makes its wines here from grapes grown in California. Founder and winemaker Russell Turco came up with the idea in 1993, and after three years of planning he made the first vintage, a 1996 Zinfandel. The grapes reach the winery about 36 hours after harvest and are crushed right away, then fermented in small tanks and handled one barrel at a time. The focus is dry reds such as Zinfandel (including an Old Vine bottling), Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley and a Petit Verdot that has won a double gold medal.

The tasting room on County Road E, between Egg Harbor and Baileys Harbor, is open daily from 10 to 5. Staff will walk you through the list, or you can taste on your own. Tastings are walk-in only on Fridays and Saturdays, and wine club members taste free.

Next door, Vino!Vino! is the winery's Tuscan wine and tapas bar, open from noon to 6 every day but Tuesday, with seating inside and on an outdoor patio when the weather allows. The grounds include a sculpture garden, a groomed one-acre lawn and bocce courts, and the barrel room hosts private events of up to 140 people.

Island Lavender is about 5 miles to the north, near Ephraim, roughly a 15-minute drive on county roads. In July, stop at the lavender fields in the morning, then come down for tapas and a glass on the patio.
