About Lautenbach's Orchard Country Winery & Farm Market
Bill and Ruth Lautenbach bought a farm and small orchard in Fish Creek in 1955. Their son Bob and his wife Anne took over in the 1970s and turned an old dairy barn into a winery and cider mill, and today Bob's children and grandchildren run the place. The family grows Door County tart cherries along with sweet cherries, apples, grapes, raspberries and pears.
The farm market is the center of a visit. The bakery makes cherry pie, donuts, turnovers and strudel fresh every day in season, and the shelves carry jams, pie filling, dried cherries, salsas, dressings, cheese and gifts, with free juice and food samples daily. Summer brings fresh cherries to the market and pick-your-own tart cherries, usually from late July into early August while supplies last.
For adults, the tasting room pours about 50 wines and hard ciders made on site from estate fruit, from whites, reds and rosés to fruit wines, port-style and sparkling. You build your own flight in a sample or regular size and sit in the cupola room or, in warm months, on the patio; seating is first come, first served. There are no guided tours, but you are welcome to walk the orchard and vineyard. Kids have a playground and yard games, and leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. The farm hosts live music on fall afternoons.
Island Lavender's farm on Highway 57 between Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay is about 20 minutes east. Plan a designated driver if you are tasting.
