About Lake Fire Winery
Lake Fire Winery opened in Baileys Harbor in May 2023 as the only Door County winery sitting right on the Lake Michigan shore. Co-owner Melissa Joppe and her husband, Chris, also run Forgotten Fire Winery in Peshtigo, which they opened in 2011. A lawn and garden run from the tasting room down to the water, and the patio looks straight out over the lake.
The list covers the full range from dry to sweet: reds, whites, fruit wines, sparkling, dessert and port-style wines. A Cabernet Franc aged in bourbon barrels and a Pinot Gris were early favorites. The hard apple ciders are made with apples from Seaquist Orchards in Door County, in rotating flavors such as blueberry, strawberry, pineapple and hop. You can taste at the bar inside or order a glass or a flight to take out to the patio. Hard seltzers, wine cocktails and non-alcoholic sodas rotate in as well.
The winery is open year-round and hosts live music on most Fridays. Snacks are limited to sweets and charcuterie, and you are welcome to bring your own food. Tourism listings describe it as family friendly, the tasting room is wheelchair accessible, and leashed pets are allowed on the patio only. There are lawn games outside, and the space is also used for small weddings and group gatherings.
Island Lavender is about 5 miles north toward Ephraim, around a 10- to 15-minute drive. In July, pair a morning at the lavender fields and shop with a late-afternoon flight on the patio.
