About Bauman Orchards
Bauman Orchards began in 1929, when Ben and Minnie Bauman started farming 20 acres in Rittman with a 10-acre apple block. Their son Marion and his wife Delores took over in 1964, and later generations added the Scenic Ridge Fruit Farm in Jeromesville (1998) and a second Rittman market (2014). Today the family farms about 260 acres of apples and peaches, and Bill Bauman's sons are the fourth generation buying into the business.
The main farm market on Rittman Avenue is open all year. The orchard grows about 25 apple varieties and 15 peach varieties, along with pears, plums, sweet corn, strawberries and blueberries. Picking starts with early apples such as Lodi in late July and Red Haven peaches around the same time. Honeycrisp, Gala and McIntosh usually come in around early September, and Jonathan, Cortland, Empire and Jonagold follow later that month. The family posts approximate ripening dates and asks shoppers to call to confirm.
Beyond fruit, the market is a full farm grocery. The cider press runs from autumn into the next summer, and the shelves carry homemade caramel apples, fresh breads, Amish fry pies, homemade pies and cookies, local honey and maple syrup, Amish jams and pickles, cheese, eggs, local meats and grab-and-go lunches. Gift baskets are made to order. The orchard also holds a tree pruning seminar in March.
Lavender Trails in Orrville is about 9 miles south, roughly a 20-minute drive, so a stop for cider and a pie here fits easily into a lavender trip.
