About Lehman's

Lehman's started in 1955, when Kidron native Jay Lehman opened a store to supply his Amish neighbors with non-electric household goods. Demand from far beyond Wayne County grew during the 1970s oil embargo and again around Y2K, and today the Kidron store fills 35,000 square feet across two floors. A 2000s expansion added a reconstructed Civil War-era barn, and the company still runs like an old-time mercantile with many departments under one roof.

Plan an hour or more to wander. Departments cover cast iron cookware, oil lamps and lanterns, wood stoves, bread-making gear, practical hand tools, books, Amish-made goods and a pantry of snacks, sweets and long-keeping foods. The toy section leans toward USA-made toys that need no batteries or screens. A redesigned appliance and bread-making area and a tiny homestead exhibit show the gear in use.

Events run through the year, from cooking demonstrations and workshops to a classic car show and a knife collectors' event; the schedule is posted on their website. Parking is free and fits motorcoaches, and group tours can be arranged ahead.

Lavender Trails in Orrville is about 15 minutes north, a four-acre lavender farm with u-pick and a farm stand. Shop Lehman's in the morning, then spend the afternoon among the lavender rows in summer.
