About Fisher Vineyards
Fisher Vineyards began in 1973, when Fred and Juelle Fisher bought an old homestead ranch high on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains above Santa Rosa. Three of their children now run the winery. The Mountain Estate has about 30 acres of vines between 1,000 and 1,400 feet, on terraces and steep slopes planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Whitney's Vineyard, first planted in 1973, still grows Chardonnay.
The buildings are part of the visit. The barn-style winery was built in 1978 from timber grown and milled on the property, designed by architect William Turnbull, and barrel caves were dug into the hillside below it in 1998, reached by a steep underground stair. The family also has a second estate about a mile south of Calistoga in Napa Valley, beside Simmons Creek.
Tastings at both estates are by appointment only. The visit fee is $95 per person for groups of up to six, and one fee is waived for each three bottles purchased. Some experiences can be booked online; for anything else, use the contact form on their website, and the winery replies within 48 hours. Preferred start times are 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Several vineyard-designated wines are made in small amounts and offered mainly to members.
Bees N Blooms, an organic lavender farm with a labyrinth, is on the other side of Santa Rosa in Bennett Valley, roughly 30 minutes away. Plan the lavender farm for the morning and the mountain tasting for midday.
