About Lavender Pond Farm

Lavender Pond Farm sits on nearly 25 acres of fields, outbuildings and a freshwater pond on Roast Meat Hill Road in Killingworth, a few miles inland from the Connecticut shoreline near Route 9 and I-95. The family bought the property in February 2014, broke ground that June and set out 9,000 lavender plants; the first field now holds about 10,000. The farm's mission comes from Barbara Cooney's picture book Miss Rumphius, whose heroine makes the world more beautiful, a story Denise shared with her mother, Joyce.

The fields mix English lavender and lavandin, including Munstead, Hidcote Giant, Edelweiss, Super Blue, Platinum Blonde, Phenomenal, Sensational, Grosso and Provence. Bloom usually runs from June into August, and some varieties rebloom in late summer, with color lasting into early October in some years. Visitors walk the rows in comfortable shoes, without clipping plants; there are no u-pick days. Kids should be supervised, and the farm's honeybee hives are best left alone.

In summer, from Mother's Day weekend to August 31, the farm is open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM (last entry 3:45). From September 1 to December 24 it is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and in winter it sells online only. The shop sells soaps, lotions, essential oil, hydrosol, body butter, sachets and pillows made by hand with the farm's lavender, plus fresh and dried bunches and culinary items. Leashed dogs are welcome, there are spots to eat a packed lunch, and the shop is wheelchair accessible with parking behind it, though the grass fields take some push. A small land train runs in good weather in season.

Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is about 25 minutes north for apple picking in fall.
