About Macari Vineyards

Macari Vineyards grows its grapes on a waterfront farm of about 500 acres in Mattituck that the Macari family has owned for more than 50 years. The winery dates to 1995, and Joseph Macari Jr. is known on the North Fork for farming biodynamically: the vineyard uses no herbicide and makes its own compost. Red blends such as the Bergen Road sit at the top of the list.

Visits center on the tasting room at 150 Bergen Avenue. The standard Seasonal Tasting is a five-wine flight for $40 per guest, poured by one of the winery's educators on the covered deck or indoors, for parties of up to six and a stay of up to two hours. Other options include La Dolce Vita, three wines with a personal pizza; the Barrel Cellar Experience at $75 with a cheese and charcuterie board; and a private suite lunch at $150 per guest for groups. A 20% service charge is added. Harvest, from late August through October, is the busiest stretch, and the winery warns that farm roads get crowded.

Children are welcome in the tasting room, though the Barrel Cellar is for guests 21 and over. Leashed dogs may join you on the lawn among the vines but not indoors or on the covered deck. Outside food and drinks are not allowed, and non-drinking guests are offered complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. The tasting room market sells wine and merchandise to walk-in shoppers.

Lavender by the Bay's North Fork field in East Marion is about 30 minutes east along Route 25, so a summer day can start among the lavender rows and end with a booked afternoon tasting in Mattituck.
