About The Black Walnut Bakery

The Black Walnut Bakery is a small, family-owned bakery in Cumberland Village, on the far east side of Ottawa. Isaac and Myroslava (Myro) opened it in 2015, bringing together his background as a ceramicist and her years baking bread downtown. Everything is made from scratch, and the bread uses a slow 24-hour ferment, which is why their larger loaves and sourdough keep well for several days.

The counter changes with the week, but expect white sourdough, cranberry lemon and raisin egg breads, almond and chocolate almond croissants, cinnamon buns, butter tarts and Nanaimo bars. Pies run from wild blueberry and apple crumble to banana coconut cream, and savory options include chicken dill pot pie, mini quiches and soup. Three items are made without gluten (orange date squares, pecan brownies and power bars), though the kitchen is not safe for severe allergies.

There is no indoor seating, but picnic tables outside make it easy to eat a croissant and coffee on the spot. You can walk in and shop without ordering ahead, or preorder from the weekly menu, which goes up Sunday morning and closes Thursday at midnight; preorders are picked up Wednesday to Saturday. From May to September they also bake sesame-topped hamburger buns in packs of six, handy for a summer cookout.

Lavenbel in Orléans is about 18 minutes west, so the bakery makes an easy breakfast or picnic stop before or after a lavender visit east of the city.
