About Virtue Cider
Virtue Cider was started in 2011 by Greg Hall, a longtime Chicago brewmaster, after he studied cider-making in England and France. He set up on a 48-acre farm outside Fennville, where heirloom apples from Midwestern growers are pressed on site and fermented without added sugar in three Norman-style cider houses with tanks set below ground. Hall sold a majority stake to a large brewer in 2015 and bought the brand back in 2024; in 2025 the farm property was put up for sale, and Hall said the cidery expected to keep operating there.
The tasting room is open year-round with seats inside and out, and the farm itself is part of the visit: walking trails loop through more than 20 acres of grassland kept as a monarch butterfly waystation, and you can reserve an Outpost, a small shelter out on the grounds with Adirondack chairs and a picnic of cheese and a bottle of cider. October hours run Thursday through Monday afternoons, with live music Friday and Saturday from 3 to 6; winter hours shrink to Friday through Sunday.
Food leans toward boards to share, such as charcuterie by the fire. The farm describes itself as family friendly, and leashed dogs are welcome outdoors. Walk-ins are fine at any time, and parties of seven or more can call to reserve. Seasonal events include an Apple Fest and a Wassail. The farm is cashless, so bring a card.
Summerhouse Lavender Farm is about 10 minutes away on 65th Street. In late June and early July, tour the lavender fields and then walk the Virtue trails with a cider.
