About Chilliwack River Valley Natural Honey
Chilliwack River Valley Natural Honey traces its start to 1979, when Agnes Coutts kept bees to pollinate a few raspberry bushes and ended up selling honey by the pail. The apiary moved to its current spot in Greendale in 1997, and Richard and Shirley Pye took over in 2005, moving hives between local meadows so each location gave its own flavor. Today it is run by Ryan and Kathryn Popma, and it still pours its honey by hand, unpasteurized and only lightly filtered.
The farm store on Adams Road sells the full range: wildflower honey, the most popular; golden blueberry honey from blueberry blossoms; amber mountain honey from remote wildflowers, trees and berries; and smooth creamed honey. Clover honey comes from partner beekeepers in Manitoba. You will also find raw bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly and pure beeswax candles, and the store lets you taste the honey before you buy.
The store is open Tuesday to Saturday, so it makes an easy stop on a weekday or Saturday drive through Chilliwack's farm country. Tour buses need an appointment. If you are heading into Vancouver, the business also runs a stall at Granville Island Public Market.
Loveleigh Lavender Farm is about 15 minutes away, so a jar of local honey and a summer lavender visit fit well into the same afternoon.
