About Chrysalis Vineyards
Chrysalis Vineyards farms more than 400 acres near Middleburg and has made Norton, a grape native to North America, its specialty. Its 40 acres of Norton vines are what the winery calls the largest planting of the grape in the world. About 50 acres of vines grow on the south side of the farm, and Hollin Vineyard in Delaplane adds 20 more acres of higher-elevation grapes. The tasting room is in the Ag District Center on Little River Turnpike.
Hours are Monday through Thursday noon to 6, Friday and Saturday noon to 8, and Sunday noon to 7, with last call for glasses and food 30 minutes before closing. Guided tastings run daily, or you can pick a self-guided flight of four 1.5-ounce pours. The winery closes on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and at 5 p.m. on December 24 and 31.
Much of the food is made on the farm. Little River Bakehouse turns out pizza, paninis and salads, and Locksley Farmstead Cheese runs its creamery in the same building, so you can pair a glass of Norton with cheese made a few steps away. Outside food and drinks are not allowed. Children are welcome outdoors and on the main floor with an adult; the upper floor and deck are for guests 21 and older. Groups larger than 8 must contact the tasting room manager before coming.
Blooming Hill Lavender Farm near Purcellville is about 25 minutes north on country roads. See its lavender gardens in the morning, then come here for a bakehouse lunch and a Norton tasting.
