About Great Lakes Lavender Farm
Great Lakes Lavender Farm is a working lavender farm on a little over four acres in Rockford, north of Grand Rapids. Sierra started growing lavender in 2017 with about 30 plants on a hobby farm in Traverse City, and the business took its current name in March 2023 when she and Andrew launched it in Rockford. The farm grows more than 50 varieties, from English lavender such as Hidcote, Munstead and Melissa to lavandins like Phenomenal and Alba, plus Spanish, Portuguese and fern-leaf types.
The farm is not open for public visits. Young plants are rooted in the farm's greenhouse from cuttings, so each named variety stays true to type, and that greenhouse keeps the farm busy year-round rather than only in bloom season. If you order ahead, you can collect your order at the farm on Wednesdays or Fridays between 10 AM and 3 PM Eastern; pickup details come with the order.
Summer is when lavender is cut for drying, picked in the morning when some flowers on each spike have opened and hung in bundles. That harvest goes into the farm's shop, which carries culinary and craft lavender buds, handmade cold-process soap, body butters, lip balms, essential oils, a lavender chest rub and gift sets. The team also sells at festivals, farmers markets, craft shows and pop-ups, and runs hands-on workshops; dates are posted on the events page of their website and on their social pages.
To see lavender fields in bloom in this part of Michigan, plan a summer trip to a farm that opens to visitors, and use this farm's online shop and market appearances for goods the rest of the year. Downtown Rockford, on the Rogue River, is about 20 minutes west if you are collecting an order.
