About Lavender & Black
Lavender & Black is a family-run farm, artisan distillery and botanical apothecary on Salt Spring Island. Alongside English lavender the family grows helichrysum, also called immortelle, plus rosemary, sage and other aromatic herbs, and they gather some plants sustainably from the surrounding forest and shore. The farm follows organic growing methods with a focus on soil health, pollinator habitat and water conservation. Everything is harvested by hand and distilled in small batches in a copper still to make essential oils and hydrosols.
The farm and studio are open from March to November, Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can take a self-guided walk, sign up for a workshop or shop the studio. The lavender blooms from May to August, with different varieties flowering in turn, and the plants are pruned back by September. The 2026 program included a guided walking and tasting tour through the lavender and immortelle fields for $30, an essential oil distillation workshop for $270 and natural perfume making for $200, in small groups that fill early.
The studio sells skin care, body care, aromatherapy blends, hydrosols, botanical perfumes, a men's line and culinary goods such as lavender honey and lavender syrup. Leashed, friendly pets are welcome.
Ganges, the island's main village, is a short drive away for lunch at the Tree House Café.
