About À la Croisée des Pommes

À la Croisée des Pommes is a certified organic orchard on rue Lacroix in Saint-Joseph-du-Lac, in the apple country west of Montreal. The orchard has welcomed pickers for about 20 years and grows its fruit without chemical treatments. Beyond more than 18 apple varieties for eating, baking, juice and jelly, the rows hold pears, plums and grapes, and fall brings squash and pumpkins.

Picking runs every day from mid-August to the end of October, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, and access to the orchard is free. The harvest calendar is staggered: Japanese plums in mid-August, Somerset grapes in late August, Savignac pears in early September, Patten pears and Toka and Mont-Royal plums in mid-September, Italian plums at the end of September and Montréal Blue grapes in early October. In mid-May the orchard is in bloom, a good time for a picnic.

The farm counter sells coffee, pastries, pie, apple donuts, apple croissants, oat and apple cookies and juice pressed on site, and there's a gift shop. Kids 12 and under have a play area (parents must supervise), and there are tractor rides, picnic tables and an owl mascot named Biobou. School groups can book field trips.

La Maison Lavande in Saint-Eustache is about 12 minutes east; in mid-August, when the lavender fields are still open, you can pair early plums here with the fields there.
