About Fromagerie du Champ à la Meule

Fromagerie du Champ à la Meule is the work of cheesemaker Martin Guilbault, who bought his family's farm in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in 1987 and spent the next few years planning a cheese dairy. The first cheese, Victor et Berthold, came out on May 31, 1995, and the dairy counts that day as its start. A shop opened on site in 2011. A major fire in 2021 forced a complete rebuild, and the dairy reopened in a new building in 2025.

The cheeses are made from thermized milk, heated gently but not fully pasteurized. Victor et Berthold, the original, now comes with a longer-aged Réserve version and a fondue kit. The rest of the lineup includes L'Amateur, Laracam, Les Métayères, Coeur du Dragon, Le Joliette, Le Tison, Terre Promise and Les Soeurs Coutu. The dairy notes that Le Joliette and Le Tison are the best melters if you are planning a raclette.

The shop is at 3601 rue Principale and posts hours of Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also prepares cheese platters, and you can order ahead to skip the wait. Because the milk is not pasteurized, the dairy suggests pregnant visitors check with their doctor before buying.

Les Jardins de Lavande Arômes et Saveurs in Sainte-Mélanie is about 10 minutes west, so a wheel or wedge from here is a natural addition to a picnic at the lavender gardens.
