About Holland Marsh Wineries

Holland Marsh Wineries is a small-batch estate on Keele Street at the edge of Newmarket, near the rich farmland of the Holland Marsh. The Nersisyan family behind it has made wine for three generations, with roots in Armenia; they settled in Canada in the early 1990s and later returned to the craft. The list runs from the everyday Ephemere line (Pinot Grigio, Gamay Noir, Baco Gamay, rosé and a new Vidal Blanc) to Select and Reserve bottles such as a Cabernet Baco, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Reserve Merlot.

The tasting bar takes walk-ins on a first-come basis; tours need a reservation. The Boutique Tour & Tasting runs about 45 minutes year-round, Wednesday to Sunday, covering the grounds and production area before a six-wine tasting for up to six people. A Reserve Collection pairing tour at 4 p.m. pours five reserve wines with food in a private tasting room, and groups of ten or more can book a VIP tour with charcuterie.

Most seating is outdoors: a covered, heated patio, benches, rustic huts and a dock on the pond. Cheese and charcuterie boards are made daily in the wine shop, and the wood-fired pizza truck, which opens for the season in May, serves on weekends from noon to 5. Outside food and drinks aren't allowed. The estate also hosts weddings, private events and an early-December Christmas market with local vendors.

The Giving Place in Mount Albert is about 25 minutes east through East Gwillimbury, so the two fit into one summer afternoon north of Toronto.
