About Salvestrin Winery

Salvestrin is a small family winery on Main Street in St. Helena, where the family's vineyards, house and winery share one property. Several generations have farmed here, and a visit feels more like a walk around a family estate than a stop at a tasting bar. The property also includes Dr. Crane's original Victorian home from the 1800s, which now serves as a setting for the winery's deeper tasting, and the family also offers lodging, with its own innkeeper.

The Estate Tasting, $75 a person, starts with a splash of the current Sauvignon Blanc, then walks you through the vineyard and winery before a seated tasting of four current releases on the patio or in the tasting room. One tasting fee is waived for every three bottles you buy. This is the visit to choose with family along: the winery calls it kid and pet friendly.

The Dr. Crane Experience, $150 a person, takes place inside the Victorian home and runs about 90 minutes to two hours. It opens with Sauvignon Blanc, covers the history of the property, and pours five reds, including the Three D Cabernet Sauvignon, with artisanal bites. Children and pets are not allowed on this one. Both visits are booked online, and parties of more than six should contact the winery first.

Bees N Blooms, the organic lavender farm with a walkable labyrinth west of Santa Rosa, is about 40 minutes away over the Mayacamas on Calistoga Road and Highway 12, so pair a morning in the lavender with an afternoon estate tour.
