About Nickel & Nickel
Nickel & Nickel occupies a restored 19th-century farmstead on Highway 29 in Oakville. The winery, co-founded by Gil Nickel, was created to make wines that each come from one vineyard, so a tasting here lines up Cabernets from different corners of Napa Valley side by side. The portfolio includes more than 20 single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, such as North Rancho in Rutherford and Fog Break on Atlas Peak, plus single-vineyard Chardonnays.
Seated tastings take place in an 1884 Victorian farmhouse. The farmstead tour also takes in a barn that dates to before the American Revolution, the barn-style winery, a fermentation cellar, the barrel room and horse stables.
The winery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reservations are encouraged, especially on weekends, though walk-ins are usually fit in. Uncork & Unwind ($75, one hour) pours four single-vineyard Cabernets; the Farmstead Experience ($115, 90 minutes) adds the guided tour and an artisan cheese plate; Digging Into Cabernet ($150, an hour and 45 minutes) pours five Cabernets with small bites from the estate chef. Groups of 9 to 16 can book a private tour and tasting. Prices are before sales tax. Guests must be 21 or older; children and pets are not accommodated. All tastings involve walking and stairs, so call ahead if you need help.
Bees N Blooms, an organic lavender farm in Bennett Valley, is about 50 minutes west over the Mayacamas. Plan a morning in the lavender and an afternoon tasting in Oakville.
